A plaster cast was made of a section of tarmac at Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin – one edge of which was rolled with printing ink and used to make a monotype. That monotype was then scanned at high resolution and printed large at three scales: 1:10, 1:15, and 1:25. Circles of 10cm diameter were drawn on the image and their radiuses added up in order to quantify the overall roughness of the sampled tarmac surface. The larger the scale, the longer the overall length: measurements are always variable based on the choice of tools and scale.
