A plaster cast was made of a section of tarmac at Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin – one edge of which was rolled with printing ink and used to make a monotype. That monotype was then scanned at high resolution and printed large. Circles were drawn on the image and the pixel lengths of their radiuses added up and translated into centimeters in order to quantify the overall roughness of the sampled tarmac surface.
